It All Starts Here
It all starts here.
The warping board, where I measure out the yarn, is sort of the equivalent of a painter’s empty canvas. The yarn of the warp, the yarn that goes onto the loom, is my blank slate where the wonderful woven designs appear.
Although measuring and counting out hundreds of threads can sometimes be tedious, I also find the process meditative. There is a rhythm to measuring out the yarn, a whole body movement that is poetic and graceful. During this step I feel the possibility and excitement of starting a new piece of work. Sort of like a new moon phase, with new and fresh energy. (and sometimes I do plan new projects to coincide with the new moon) I am often generating new ideas for the piece while I measure out the yarn. While a lot of precise calculation and designing is required to even know how much yarn to measure out and how many threads, there is always a portion of the weaving that I am still figuring out and designing as I go, and sometimes the movement and action of this step is crucial to my creative process. I feel a lot of inspiration about other topics while I am winding yarn, and often interrupt the process numerous times to go jot down notes and revelations.
Like right now, for example. I was just winding the yarn for a warp and decided I suddenly needed to start this blog post.
This is my first blog post on this website. I enjoy writing, but had moved away from it in recent years. Then I was reading some of my old writings a few months ago and realized that I really missed writing, and so here I am again, putting my thoughts down in words for whoever is out there wanting to read them.
I invite you to step into the inner world of my creative process, and peek into the steps of weaving, each with their own character. This blog serves as a sort of creative journal for my journey, which spirals deeper with each project I begin.
