"Madre Mar" (Mother Ocean) is inspired by my love affair with the ocean. And don't we all have a love affair with the sea? It is the origin of all life on Earth. All life comes from the Sea.

My weaving studio was temporarily located at Playa Nosara, Costa Rica during the creation of most of this piece. My home studio overlooks the sea as well, and so the Pacific Ocean was a daily touchstone of inspiration for this weaving.

This piece also evokes the ocean meeting the beach, and features shells from Playa Nosara, Costa Rica. Many different hand dyed yarns of silk, cotton, and linen, as well as small beads placed throughout the weaving, give this piece a rich textural quality. Secretly embedded in the weaving is an encoded design based on the words "Madre Mar". Hung from preserved driftwood from Playa Dominical, Costa Rica. Size: 18” x 42”.
